  • Crystal Palace Yarns Aran yarn (worsted weight; 100% wool; 102 yds/50g per ball): 1 ball each redwood #1014 (A) and yellow gold #1004 (B)
  • Size 9 (5.5mm) double-pointed (set of 4) and 16-inch circular needles or size needed to obtain gauge


  • 16 sts and 20 rnds = 4 inches/10cm in St st.
  • To save time, take time to check gauge.

Special Abbreviations

N1, N2: Needle 1, Needle 2
Make 1 (M1): Insert LH needle from front to back under the running thread between the last st worked and next st on LH needle. With RH needle, knit into back of this loop.

Pattern Stitches

Corrugated Rib A (multiple of 4 sts)
Rnd 1: *K2 A, p2 B; rep from * around. Rep Rnd 1 for pat.
Corrugated Rib B (multiple of 4 sts)
Rnd 1: *K2 B, p2 A; rep from * around. Rep Rnd 1 for pat.

Special Techique

I-Cord: *K4, do not turn, slip sts back to LH needle; rep from * until cord is desired length.

Pattern Notes

Do not cut yarn not in use; twist A & B at beg of every round.
When decreasing crown, change to double-pointed needles when stitches no longer fit comfortably on circular needle.


With dpn and A, cast on 4 sts.
Work I-Cord for 18 inches (or desired length).

Row 1 (WS): K1, p2, k1.
Row 2: K1, M1, p2, M1, k1 -- 6 sts.
Rows 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13: K1, purl to last st, k1.
Row 4: K1, M1, k1, p2, k1, M1, k1 -- 8 sts.
Row 6: K1, M1, k2, p2, k2, M1, k1 -- 10 sts.
Row 8: K1, M1, k3, p2, k3, M1, k1 -- 12 sts.
Row 10: K1, M1, k4, p2, k4, M1, k1 -- 14 sts.
Row 12: K1, M1, k5, p2, k5, M1, k1 -- 16 sts.
Row 14: K1, M1, k6, p2, k6, M1, k1 -- 18 sts.
Row 15: K1, purl to last st, k1.
Row 16 (RS): K8, p2, k8.
Rep Rows 15 and 16 until Earflap measures 3 1/2 inches from I-Cord ties and ending with Row 15.
Cut yarn, leaving an 8-inch tail and leave sts on dpn.
Work 2nd tie and Earflap to match first.
Do not cut yarn.

Join Earflaps
Rnd 1: With circular needle, work Row 16 across 2nd earflap sts; turn work and using cable method, cast on 24 sts; turn work again and with RS facing, work Row 16 across first earflap sts; turn work and using cable method, cast on 24 sts; turn work so that RS is facing again; place marker for beg of rnd and join, taking care not to twist sts-84 sts.

With A, purl 3 rnds, knit 3 rnds.
Join B and knit 2 rnds.
With A, knit 2 rnds.
Work 8 rnds Corrugated Rib B.
With B, knit 3 rnds.
With A, knit 2 rnds.
With B, knit 2 rnds.
Work 8 rnds Corrugated Rib A.
With A, knit 3 rnds.
With B, knit 1 rnd.

Rnd 1 (dec): *K2tog B, [k1 B, k1 A] 5 times; rep from * around -- 77 sts.
Rnd 2 and all even-numbered rnds: Knit the colors as they present themselves.
Rnd 3 (dec): *K2tog B, [k1 B, k1 A] 4 times, k1 B; rep from * around -- 70 sts.
Rnd 5 (dec): *K2tog B, [k1 B, k1 A] 4 times; rep from * around -- 63 sts.
Rnd 7 (dec): *K2tog B, [k1 B, k1 A] 3 times, k1 B; rep from * around -- 56 sts.
Rnd 9 (dec): *K2tog B, [k1 B, k1 A] 3 times; rep from * around -- 49 sts.
Rnd 11 (dec): *K2tog B, [k1 B, k1 A] twice, k1 B; rep from * around -- 42 sts.
Rnd 13 (dec): *K2tog B, [k1 B, k1 A] twice; rep from * around -- 35 sts.
Rnd 15 (dec): *K2tog B, k1 B, k1 A, k1 B; rep from * around -- 28 sts.
Rnd 17 (dec): *K2tog B, k1 B, k1 A; rep from * around -- 21 sts.
Rnd 19 (dec): *K2tog B, k1 A; rep from * around -- 14 sts.
Rnd 20: Rep Rnd 2.
*K2tog B, k2tog A; rep from * until 4 sts rem.

Option 1: Bind off, alternating k1 A, k1 B.
Option 2: Work checked I-Cord of desired length, alternating k1A, k1B and working each new st with the opposite color of st on needle, then bind off and cut yarns, leaving an 8-inch tail. With tapestry needle, pull yarns down into I-Cord about 3-4 inches, then cut ends, hiding them inside.
Weave in all ends. Block as necessary.
