Circumference: 21 inches
20 sts and 20 rnds = 4 inches/10cm in stranded St st.
To save time, take time to check gauge.
Braid (multiple of 2 sts)
Rnd 1: *K1 A, k1 B; rep from * around.
Rnd 2: Carrying both yarns on RS and bringing one strand over the previous strand when working it, *p1 A, p1 B; rep from * around.
Rnd 3: Carrying both yarns on RS and bringing one strand under the previous strand when working it, *p1 A, p1 B; rep from * around.

When working the Braid pattern, the yarns will spiral around each other on Round 2; do not untwist them because they will untwist themselves on Round 3.
Body
With circular needle and A, cast on 98 sts; place marker for beg of rnd and join, taking care not to twist sts.
Knit 1 rnd, purl 1 rnd, knit 1 rnd.
Next 3 rnds: Work Braid pat.
With A, *knit 1 rnd, purl 1 rnd; rep from * once.
Following chart, work 1 rep of Fair Isle pat.
Crown
Rnd 1: With A, knit and dec 3 sts evenly around -- 95 sts.
Rnd 2: Purl.
Rnd 3: Work Crown chart 5 times around -- 85 sts.
Complete Crown chart -- 5 sts rem.
Cut yarn, leaving a 5-inch tail.
Using tapestry needle, thread tail through rem sts, and pull tight.
Finishing
Weave in all ends.
Cut 6 strands of each color, each approx 15 inches long. Hold strands tog and tie an overhand knot in the middle. Make braids on either side of knot, then knot ends. Attach to top of hat.
