Row 1 (RS): *K1, [p1, k1] 4 times, p9; rep from * to last 9 sts, end k1, [p1, k1] 4 times.
Row 2: P1, [k1, p1] 4 times, *k9, p1 [k1, p1] 4 times; rep from * across.
Row 3: *P1, [k1, p1] 4 times, k9; rep from * to last 9 sts, end p1, [k1, p1] 4 times.
Row 4: K1, [p1, k1] 4 times, *p9, k1, [p1, k1] 4 times; rep from * across.
Rows 5-12: [Rep Rows 1-4] twice more.

Cast on 171 (189, 207, 225) sts and work Rows 1-24 of pat until piece measures approx 14 (14 1/2, 14, 15) inches, ending with a WS row.
Next row: Work 42 (47, 51, 56) sts and place on holder; work 87 (95, 105, 113) sts; place rem 42 (47, 51, 56) sts on 2nd holder.
Continue to work in established pat until back measures 8 (8 1/2, 9, 9) inches from armhole, ending with a WS row.
Row 1: At beg of row, bind off 9 (10, 11, 12) sts, work 19 (21, 23, 25) sts; bind off center 31 (33, 37, 39) back neck sts; work to end of row.
Row 2: Working both sides at once with separate balls, bind off 9 (10, 11, 12) sts at beg of next row, work across.
Rows 3 and 4: Bind off 9 (10, 11, 12) sts at beg of row, work across.
Rows 5 and 6: Bind off rem 10 (11, 12, 13) sts.
Place right front sts on needles and continue to work in established pat until armhole measures 5 (5 1/2, 6, 6) inches, ending with a WS row.

Beg on next row, inc 1 st at each edge [every 4th (4th, 5th, 5th) row] 8 (10, 10, 8) times, then [every 7th (6th, 6th, 8th) row] 10 (11, 11, 10) times, working inc into pat. Work even on 73 (79, 83, 83) sts until sleeve measures 17 (18, 19, 20) inches from cast-on edge.
Bind off all sts in pat.
Sew shoulder seams. Sew sleeve seam, then pin into armhole and sew in place.
Pick up and knit 88 (92, 92, 98) sts along left front. Knit 5 rows. Bind off all sts.
Pick up and knit 88 (92, 92, 98) sts along right front and knit 2 rows.
On next row, work buttonholes as follows: k2 (2, 2, 3), [yo, k2tog, k18 (19, 19, 20)] 4 times, end yo, k2tog, k4 (4, 4, 5).
Knit 2 rows. Bind off all sts.
With RS facing and beg at button-band edge, pick up and knit 72 (74, 76, 78) sts evenly around neck.
Knit 2 rows. Bind off all sts.
Sew buttons opposite buttonholes.
Block gently.
