What Is a Chemo Cap?

Deborah asks: "Are cancer caps different than hats that might be knitted for warmth, and if so, how are they different?"

Editor's Comments

Thank you for your question regarding chemo caps versus caps knitted for warmth. While they may be similar, and in many cases are the same, chemo caps require extra consideration.

  • Yarns must be soft because the scalp is very sensitive.
  • Hats should be seamless -- anything other than smooth fabric can irritate the scalp.
  • Yarns shouldn't be too heavy because the caps will often be worn indoors.
  • Hats should be fabulous! Losing one's hair can be traumatic and wearing a stylish cap can help ease the pain.
