Quick-to-knit panels combine to turn a solid color into a multi-textured coverlet.

Finished Size
Approx 48 x 60 inches

Materials

  • Plymouth Wildflower DK weight 51 percent mercerized cotton/49 percent acrylic yarn (137 yds/50g per ball): 32 balls green #11
  • Size 9 (5.5mm) needles or size needed to obtain gauge
  • Size 10 1/2 (6.5mm) needles
  • Tapestry needle

Gauge
17 sts and 23 rows = 4 inches/10cm in pat with smaller needles and 2 strands of yarn
To save time, take time to check gauge.

Pattern Note
Afghan is worked with 2 strands of yarn held tog throughout.

Special Abbreviation
Twist 3: K3tog but do not sl off needle. Knit first st on LH needle and sl off needle, knit 2nd st in same way, sl last st off needle without knitting it.

Cable & Leaf Panel (33 sts)
Row 1 (RS): P2, *k7, p3, k3, p3, rep from *, end last rep p2.
Row 2 and all even rows: Purl.
Row 3: P2, *k7, p3, twist 3, p3, rep from *, end last rep p2.
Row 5: P2, *ssk, k3, k2tog, p3, [k1, yo] twice, k1, p3, rep from *, end last rep p2.
Row 7: P2, *ssk, k1, k2tog, p3, k2, yo, k1, yo, k2, p3, rep from *, end p2.
Row 9: P2, *twist 3, p3, k7, p3, rep from *, end p2.
Row 11: P2, *k3, p3, k7, p3, rep from *, end p2.
Row 13: Rep Row 9.
Row 15: P2, *[k1, yo] twice, k1, p3, ssk, k3, k2tog, p3, rep from *, end p2.
Row 17: P2, *k2, yo, k1, yo, k2, p3, ssk, k1, k2tog, p3, rep from *, end p2.
Row 19: Rep Row 3.
Row 20: Purl.

Fence Post Lace Panel (49 sts)
Rows 1 and 3 (WS): K1, p1, *k3, p1, rep from *, end k3.
Rows 2 and 6: Knit.
Row 4: K1, k2tog, *yo, k1, yo, k3tog, rep from *, end yo, k2.
Rows 5 and 7: K3, *p1, k3, rep from;*, end p1, k1.
Row 8: K2, yo, *k3tog, yo, k1, yo, rep from *, end k2tog, k1.
Rep Rows 1-8 for pat.

Cable & Leaf Panel
Make 3
With smaller needles and 2 strands of yarn, cast on 33 sts and work in pat for 330 rows, ending with Row 10 (approx 58 inches), maintaining purl garter selvage throughout. Bind off all sts.

Fence Post Lace Panel
Make 2
With smaller needles and 2 strands of yarn, cast on 49 sts and work in pat for 330 rows, ending with Row 2 (approx 58 inches), maintaining knit garter selvage throughout. Bind off all sts.

Finishing
Assemble panels in this sequence: leaf -- lace -- leaf -- lace -- leaf. Sew with a single strand of yarn, working from a garter st bump on 1 edge to a corresponding bump on opposite edge for a nearly invisible seam.

Border
On lower edge with RS facing and smaller needles, pick up and knit 212 sts, knit 6 rows. Bind off with larger needles.

Rep for top edge. Damp block if necessary.
