Interesting color designs take shape in this place mat with its easy garter stitch border.

Approximately 12 x 18 inches

Materials

  • Worsted weight variegated cotton yarn* (2 oz per ball): 2 balls orange sherbet ombre #131
  • Size 6 needles or size needed to obtain gauge
  • Tapestry needle

*Sample project was completed with Peaches and Creme (100 percent cotton) from Elmore-Pisgah Inc.

Gauge
9 sts and 13 rows = 2 inches/5cm in pat
To save time, take time to check gauge.

Pattern Notes
Seven balls should make 4 place mats. Start new balls of yarn by joining at same point in color rep.
Place mat is reversible if ends are worked in neatly.

Special Abbreviation
Rev St st: Knit on WS, purl on RS.

Pattern Stitch
Choose 1 color in variegated yarn as color A (yellow in sample). Any other color is color B (orange in sample). Where yarn is color A, work in rev St st on RS, where yarn is color B, work in St st. This will also create some areas of garter st.

Border
Beg at end, cast on 54 sts. Knit 3 rows.

Center
Row 1 (RS): K3, work 48 sts in pat, k3.
Rep Row 1 until mat measures 17 1/2 inches from beg, ending with a RS row.

Border
Knit 3 rows. Bind off all sts. Block lightly.
