It Begins So Innocently
A common topic whenever knitters congregate is the size of their yarn stashes. No matter how much yarn we have at home it seems we all have the fear that one day yarn manufacturers will cease their operations and sell no more yarn except in a black market in some dark alley. I've heard of men in golf-club locker rooms comparing the sizes of their wives' stashes the way they might have once bragged about that great putt on the 18th green.
When it comes to purchasing yarn, beginner knitters seem to go through several steps as they become more experienced. At first, many beginner knitters purchase yarn and needles for the one project they intend to complete, before they so much as look at other yarns. They knit happily along on their project, delighted with their newfound passion. If their pattern is a long scarf in garter stitch or a baby blanket in fine yarn, the project's size and the sheer miles of yarn in the same stitch may begin to bore them senseless as they work toward completion. What's more boring than knitting the same stitch over and over, even for a novice knitter?
