Materials

  • Knit One, Crochet Too Nautika (worsted weight; 85% micro-fiber acrylic/15% nylon; 98 yds/50g per skein): 7 (8, 9, 10) skeins chalk #658 (A), 6 (7, 8, 9) skeins marine #687 (B)
  • Size 5 (3.75mm) 24-inch circular and double-point needles or size needed to obtain gauge
  • Size 9 (5.5mm) 32-inch circular needle or size needed to obtain gauge
  • Stitch holders
  • Stitch markers

Gauge

12 sts and 24 rows = 4 inches/10cm in Mesh pat with larger needle.

20 sts and 28 rows = 4 inches/10cm in St st with smaller needle.

To save time, take time to check gauge.

Special Abbreviations

Make 1 (M1): Insert tip of LH needle from front to back under horizontal strand between last st worked and next st on LH needle, k1 through back of resulting loop.

Yarn over twice (2yo): Wrap yarn around needle twice.

Pattern Stitches

Note: A chart for Mesh pat st is provided for those preferring to work pat st from a chart.

Mesh (multiple of 2 sts + 2)

Row 1 (RS): K2, *k2tog, yo; rep from * to last 2 sts, end k2.

Row 2 (WS): P2, *k2tog, yo; rep from * to last 2 sts, end p2.

Rep Rows 1 and 2 for pat.

Pleat (multiple of 12 sts + 4)

Row 1 (RS): Purl.

Row 2: Work Row 2 of Mesh pat.

Rows 3, 4 and 5: Knit.

Rows 6, 8 and 10: Purl.

Rows 7 and 9: Knit.

Row 11 (pleat row): K2, *slip next 4 sts to dpn, slip next 4 sts to 2nd dpn; turn 2nd needle so sts go in opposite direction and sts on dpns are RS tog; knit first st on each needle tog in following order: first dpn, 2nd dpn and circular needle; rep from * across to last 2 sts, k2.

Row 12: Bind off kwise.

Special Techniques

I-Cord: Using dpns, cast on 3 sts. *K3, do not turn, slide sts to opposite end of needle, pull yarn across back; rep from * until I-cord is indicated length.

Attached I-Cord: Using dpns, *k2, ssk (I-cord st with edging st), slide sts to opposite end of needle, pull yarn across back; rep from * as indicated.

Top

Body

With larger needle and A, cast on 68 (72, 76, 80) sts.

Row 1 (RS): Purl.

Row 2 (WS): Beg Mesh pat, starting with WS row.

Inc row: K2, M1, work in pat to last 2 sts, M1, k2 -- 70 (74, 78, 82) sts.

Note: Work inc sts in garter st until there are enough sts to work another rep of pat.

Rep Inc row [every RS row] 8 (9, 9, 10) times, [every 4th row] 4 (4, 5, 5) times then work even at armhole edge until front inc are complete -- 94 (100, 106, 112) sts.

Note: Piece should measure approx 6 1/2 (7, 7 1/2, 8) inches.

Next row (dividing row RS): Work in pat across 27 (29, 31, 33) sts for right front, place next 40 (42, 44, 46) sts on holder for back and rem 27 (29, 31, 33) sts on holder for left front.

Right Front

Shape armhole

Continue to inc at front edge [every 6th row] twice, then [every 8th row] once and at the same time bind off at armhole edge [2 sts] once, [1 st] twice and then 1 st [every 4th row] 1 (1, 2, 2) time(s) -- 25 (27, 28, 30) sts.

Note: Armhole should measure approx 3 inches.

Shape neck

Work 7 (8, 8, 9) sts in Mesh pat (left shoulder); join 2nd ball of yarn and bind off next 6 sts (neck), work rem 12 (13, 14, 15) sts in Mesh pat (right shoulder).

Working both shoulders at once with separate balls of yarn, continue in Mesh pat, binding off at each neck edge [1 st] 3 (3, 4, 4) times -- 4 (5, 4, 5) sts on left shoulder, 9 (10, 10, 11) sts on right shoulder.

Bind off all sts.

Left Front

With RS facing, place 27 (29, 31, 33) sts for left front on needle.

Shape armhole

Continue to inc at front edge [every 6th row] twice, then [every 8th row] once and at the same time bind off at armhole edge [2 sts] once, [1 st] twice and then 1 st [every 4th row] 1 (1, 2, 2) time(s) -- 25 (27, 28, 30) sts.

Note: Armhole should measure approx 3 inches.

Shape neck

Work 12 (13, 14, 15) sts in Mesh pat (left shoulder); join 2nd ball of yarn and bind off next 6 sts (neck), work rem 7 (8, 8, 9) sts in Mesh pat (right shoulder).

Working both shoulders at once with separate balls of yarn, continue in Mesh pat, binding off at each neck edge [1 st] 3 (3, 4, 4) times -- 4 (5, 4, 5) sts on left shoulder, 9 (10, 10, 11) sts on right shoulder.

Bind off all sts.

Back

Shape armhole

With RS facing, place sts for back on needle.

Continue in pat and bind off at each armhole edge [2 sts] once, [1 st] twice and then 1 st [every 4th row] 1 (1, 2, 2) time(s) -- 30 (32, 32, 34) sts.

Continue even in pat until armhole measures 4 1/2 (4 3/4, 5, 5 1/4) inches. Mark center 8 sts.

Shape neck

Work in pat to first marker; join 2nd ball of yarn, bind off 8 sts and work in pat to end -- 11 (12, 12, 13) sts on each side.

Working both sides at once with separate balls of yarn, bind off 2 sts at each neck edge -- 9 (10, 10, 11) sts rem each side.

Bind off all sts.

Sleeves

With larger needle and A, cast on 30 (32, 34, 36) sts.

Row 1 (RS): Purl.

Row 2 (WS): Work Row 2 of Mesh pat.

Work 4 rows in Mesh pat.

Inc row (RS): K2, M1, work in Mesh pat to last 2 sts, M1, k2 -- 32 (34, 36, 38) sts.

Rep Inc row [every 6th row] 2 (2, 3, 3) times -- 36 (38, 42, 44) sts.

Work even in pat until sleeve measures 3 1/2 (3 3/4, 4 1/4, 4 3/4) inches.

Continue in pat and bind off on each side [3 sts] once, [2 sts] once, [1 st] 4 (4, 5, 5) times -- 18 (20, 22, 24) sts.

Bind off all sts.

Pleat Borders

Fronts/back

Size 2 only

Make 2: With B, cast on 232 sts and work Rows 1-12 of Pleat pat.

Make 1: With B, cast on 208 sts and work Rows 1-12 of Pleat pat.

Size 4 only

Make 3: With B, cast on 256 sts and work Rows 1-12 of Pleat pat.

Size 6 only

Make 2: With B, cast on 268 sts and work Rows 1-12 of Pleat pat.

Make 1: With B, cast on 280 sts and work Rows 1-12 of Pleat pat.

Size 8 only

Make 3: With B, cast on 292 sts and work Rows 1-12 of Pleat pat.

Sleeves

Make 2: With B, cast on 124 (124, 136, 136) sts and work Rows 1-12 of Pleat pat.

Finishing

Sew shoulder seams. Sew sleeve pleat to bottom of sleeve, then sew sleeve seam. Sew sleeve to body. Sew front and back pleat edges tog. Sew pleats to body with joining seams at underarm.

Neckband

With smaller circular needle and B, pick up and knit around neck edge, slide sts to opposite end of needle. Cut yarn.

With 2 dpns and B, work 6 (7, 8, 9) inches of I-cord, work attached I-cord around neck edge, and then work another 6 (7, 8, 9) inches of I-cord. Bind off all sts.

Ties

Make 2

With 2 dpns and B, work 6 (7, 8, 9) inches of I-cord. Bind off.

Sew 1 tie to center of RS of left shoulder. Sew other tie to center of WS seam of right shoulder.

To wear: Overlap right front over left and tie left front to WS of right shoulder. Tie right front to left shoulder.

Shorts

Left Leg

With smaller circular needle and A, cast on 65 (69, 73, 79) sts.

Next row (WS): Knit.

Beg with a knit row, work 6 rows in St st.

Inc row (RS): K2, M1, knit to last 2 sts, M1, k2 -- 67 (71, 75, 81) sts.

Rep Inc row [every 8th row] twice, then [every 6th row] 2 (2, 3, 3) times -- 75 (79, 85, 91) sts.

Work even in pat until side measures 5 1/2 (6, 6 1/2, 7) inches.

Shape crotch

Bind off at beg of row [3 sts] 2 (2, 2, 4) times, [2 sts] 2 (2, 4, 2) times -- 65 (69, 71, 75) sts.

Dec 1 st each side by k1, ssk, knit to last 3 sts k2tog, k1 [every RS row] 3 (4, 4, 4) times -- 59 (61, 63, 67) sts.

Work even until crotch measures 4 inches, ending with a WS row.

Shape pocket

Row 1 (RS): K30 (31, 32, 34) sts for back and place on holder; bind off 3 sts, knit to end of row -- 26 (27, 28, 30) sts for front.

Row 2: Purl.

Row 3: Bind off 2 sts, knit across -- 24 (25, 26, 28) sts.

Dec by k1, ssk at beg of [each RS row] 4 times -- 20 (21, 22, 24) sts.

Work even until crotch measures 6 (6 1/4, 6 1/2, 6 3/4) inches, ending with a WS row. Place front sts on holder.

Left pocket lining

Note: Read through instructions before beg as shaping on sides is worked at the same time for some sizes.

With A, cast on 13 sts.

Inc row (RS): K1, M1, knit across row -- 14 sts.

Rep Inc row [every RS row] 4 (5, 6, 7) times -- 18 (19, 20, 21) sts.

Work even until pocket lining measures 2 (2 1/4, 2 1/2, 2 3/4) inches, ending with a RS row.

Bind off for pocket edge at beg of WS rows [3 sts] once, then [2 sts] once. Dec at end of [every RS row] 4 times.

At the same time when pocket lining measures 2 1/2 (2 3/4, 3, 3 1/4) inches, dec at beg of RS row (front edge of pocket) [every 4 rows] 3 times -- 6 (7, 8, 9) sts.

Place sts on holder.

Left side pocket

With A, cast on 13 sts.

Inc 1 st at end of [every RS row] 5 (6, 7, 8) times -- 18 (19, 20, 21) sts.

Work even until pocket measures 2 (2 1/4, 2 1/2, 2 3/4) inches, ending with a WS row.

Joining row: With RS facing, place 30 (31, 32, 34) back sts on needle, then knit across 18 (19, 20, 21) pocket sts -- 48 (50, 52, 55) sts.

At the same time, when pocket measures 2 1/2 (2 3/4, 3, 3 1/4) inches, dec 1 st at end of row (front edge of pocket), [every 4th row] 3 times -- 45 (47, 49, 52) sts.

Sew front pocket and pocket lining along pocket opening edge. Sew pocket lining and side pocket edges tog.

Note: There will be an overlap of 6 (7, 8, 9) sts between side pocket sts and front pocket lining sts when worked into waistband.

Right Leg

Work same as left leg to pocket shaping.

Shape pocket

Row 1 (RS): K29 (30, 31, 33) sts for front. Place rem 30 (31, 32, 32) sts on holder for back.

Row 2: Bind off 3 sts, purl to end of row -- 26 (27, 28, 30) sts.

Row 3: Knit.

Row 4: Bind off 2 sts, purl across -- 24 (25, 26, 28) sts.

Dec by k1, ssk at end [each RS row] 4 times -- 20 (21, 22, 24) sts.

Work even until crotch measures 6 (6 1/4, 6 1/2, 6 3/4) inches, ending with a WS row. Place sts on holder.

Right pocket lining

Note: Read through instructions before beg as shaping on sides is worked at the same time for some sizes.

With A, cast on 13 sts.

Inc row (RS): Knit to last st, M1, k1 -- 14 sts.

Rep Inc row [every RS row] 4 (5, 6, 7) times -- 18 (19, 20, 21) sts.

Work even until pocket lining measures 2 (2 1/4, 2 1/2, 2 3/4) inches, ending with a WS row.

Bind off for pocket edge at beg RS rows [3 sts] once, then [2 sts] once.

Dec at beg [every RS row] 4 times.

At the same time, when pocket lining measures 2 1/2 (2 3/4, 3, 31/4) inches, dec at end of RS row (front edge of pocket) [every 4 rows] 3 times -- 6 (7, 8, 9) sts.

Place sts on holder.

Right side pocket

With A, cast on 13 sts.

Inc 1 st at beg of [every RS row] 5 (6, 7, 8) times -- 18 (19, 20, 21) sts.

Work even until pocket measures 2 (2 1/4, 2 1/2, 2 3/4) inches, ending with a WS row.

Joining row: With RS facing, knit across 18 (19, 20, 21) pocket sts then k30 (31, 32, 34) back sts from holder -- 48 (50, 52, 55) sts.

At the same time, when pocket measures 2 1/2 (2 3/4, 3, 3 1/4) inches, dec 1 st at beg of row (front edge of pocket), [every 4th row] 3 times -- 45 (47, 49, 52) sts.

Sew front pocket and pocket lining along pocket opening edge.

Sew pocket lining and side pocket edges tog.

Note: There will be an overlap of 6 (7, 8, 9) sts between side pocket sts and front pocket lining sts when worked into waistband.

Waistband

Note: Place pocket lining sts on dpn.

Rnd 1: Beg at center right front with smaller circular needle and A, knit right front to last 6 (7, 8, 9) sts, [k3tog] 6 (7, 8, 9) times, working front pocket sts, lining sts and back pocket sts tog for top of right pocket; knit across back sts, [k3tog] 6 (7, 8, 9) times, working front pocket sts, lining sts, and back pocket sts tog for top of left pocket, knit to center left front -- 118 (122, 126, 134) sts.

Place marker on needle and join to work in rnds.

Rnd 2: Purl.

Rnds 3 and 4: Knit.

Rnd 5: K5 (7, 4, 8), *k2tog, 2yo, k4, k2tog, 2yo, k3); rep from * 10 (10, 11, 11) times, end k3 (5, 2, 5).

Rnd 6: Knit around, dropping 2nd yo.

Rnd 7: Knit.

Rnd 8: Purl.

Rnd 9: Knit.

Bind off kwise.

Pleats

Make 2: With B, cast on 184 (184, 196, 196) sts and work Rows 1-12 of Pleat pat.

Finishing

Sew front, back and leg seams.

For drawstring: With B, make 36 (39, 42, 45) inches of twisted cord or 3-st I-cord.

Beg and ending at center front, weave drawstring through yo openings.
