It's a Wrap

I had a student, not too long ago, ask me, "Which is the right way -- ssk decrease or the s1-k1-psso decrease?"

One of my favorite things about knitting is that there aren't any hard-and-fast rules. The fiber arts open us up to a whole new realm of discovery and exploration. With the explosion of new yarns came new techniques, different construction methods and novel project ideas. Look at all of the different swatching methods! Seamed sweaters were thought to be the only way, but now we have in-the-round, top-down, bottom-up, sideways and more! Socks have amazingly unique constructions, heels and toes -- toe-up, bottom-down, heel-out and sideways. In fact, some of my favorite stitch patterns happened because I worked something incorrectly the first time.

I told my dear student, "Both decreases are right, but find the one that works best for you. There isn't a wrong way in knitting, only a failure to try it out and play."

What is the best part about experimenting with knitting for you? Have you accidentally discovered a better stitch, technique or construction? I can't to hear about it.
