Lace Stripe Cardigan

The project we're offering free of charge with this issue, Lace Stripe Cardigan, was designed by Celeste Pinheiro. It's a lovely season-spanning garment made with worsted weight yarn; the sample was knit in Fantasy Naturale, a great cotton yarn with many color options. This easy pattern will provide interesting knitting and lots of great wearing too.

Comfortable for everyday shopping, yet classic enough for business meetings, this cardigan is worked in a pattern of lace stripes.

Size
To fit woman’s extra-small (small, medium, large) Instructions are given for smallest size, with larger sizes in parentheses. When only 1 number is given, it applies to all sizes.

Finished Measurement
Chest: 39 (42, 46, 48) inches

Materials

  • Worsted weight cotton yarn* (140 yds/100g per skein): 9 (9, 10, 10) skeins teal #2355
  • Size 6 (4mm) needles
  • Size 8 (5mm) needles or size needed to obtain gauge
    • 6 (5/8-inch) buttons
*Sample project was completed with Fantasy Naturale (100 percent cotton) from Plymouth Yarn Co.

Gauge
16 sts = 4 inches/10cm in Lace Stripe pat with larger needles
To save time, take time to check gauge.

Special Abbreviation
Inc: Increase by knitting in front and back of st.

Pattern Stitch
Lace Stripe

Note: Work each row with needle size indicated: A for size 8, B for size 6.

Row 1 (RS), A: Knit.
Row 2, A: Purl.
Row 3, A: K1, *p1, k1; rep from * across.
Row 4, A: Rep Row 3.
Rows 5 and 6, A: Rep Rows 1 and 2.
Rows 7 and 8, B: Knit.
Rows 9 and 10, A: Rep Rows 1 and 2.
Row 11, A: *K2tog, yo; rep from *, end k1.
Row 12, A: Rep Row 2.
Rows 13 and 14, A: Rep Rows 1 and 2.
Rows 15–18, B: Knit.
Rows 19 and 20, A: Rep Rows 1 and 2.
Row 21, A: K1, *yo, ssk, k4; rep from * across.
Rows 22, 24, 26 and 28, A: Purl.
Row 23, A: K1, *k1, yo, ssk, k1, k2tog, yo; rep from* to last 6 sts, end k1, yo, ssk, k3.
Row 25, A: K1, *k2, yo, sl 1, k2tog, psso, yo, k1; rep from * across.
Row 27, A: K1, *k3, yo, ssk, k1; rep from * across.
Rep Rows 1–28 for pat.

Back
With smaller needles, cast on 79 (85, 91, 97) sts.
Row 1 (WS): Knit.
Row 2 (RS): *K2tog, yo; rep from *, end k1.
Row 3: Knit.

Change to larger needles and beg Lace Stripe pat. Work until back measures 12 1/2 (13, 13 1/2, 14 1/2) inches from beg, ending with a WS row.

Shape armhole
Maintaining pat, bind off 6 sts at beg of next 2 rows. (67, 73, 79, 85 sts)
Work even until back measures 201/2 (21 1/2, 22 1/2, 23 1/2) inches from beg, ending with a WS row.

Shape back neck
Work across 19 (21, 23, 26) sts; attach a 2nd ball of yarn and bind off center 29 (31, 33, 33) sts, work to end. Work both sides at once until back measures 21 (22, 23, 24) inches from beg. Bind off all sts.

Left Front
With smaller needles, cast on 39 (43, 45, 49) sts.

Work as for back until front measures approx 12 1/2 (13, 13 1/2, 14 1/2) inches from beg, ending with a WS row.

Shape armhole
Maintaining pat bind off 6 sts, work to end. (33, 37, 39, 43 sts)

Work even until front measures 18 1/2 (19 1/2, 20 1/2, 21 1/2) inches from beg, ending with a RS row.

Shape front neck
Bind off 14 (15, 16, 17) sts, work to end. (19, 21, 23, 26 sts)
Work even in pat until front measures 21 (22, 23, 24) inches from beg.
Bind off all sts.

Right Front
With smaller needles, cast on 39 (43, 45, 49) sts.
Work as for back until front measures approx 12 1/2 (13, 13 1/2, 14 1/2) inches from beg, ending with a RS row.

Shape armhole
Maintaining pat bind off 6 sts, work to end. (33, 37, 39, 43 sts)
Work even until front measures 18 1/2 (19 1/2, 20 1/2, 21 1/2) inches from beg, ending with a WS row.

Shape front neck
Bind off 14 (15, 16, 17) sts, work to end. (19, 21, 23, 26 sts)
Work even in pat until front measures 21 (22, 23, 24) inches from beg.
Bind off all sts.

Sleeves
With smaller needles, cast on 39 sts. Work as for back, inc 0 (0, 4, 4) sts evenly across on Row 1 of Lace Stripe pat. (39, 39, 43, 43 sts)

Work until sleeve measures 19 1/2 (19 1/2, 18 1/2, 18 1/2) inches from beg, at the same time, beg with Row 3 of Lace Stripe pat, inc 1 st at each side [every 6th row] 15 (17, 17, 17) times. (69, 73, 77, 77 sts)
Bind off all sts.

Assembly
Sew shoulder, armhole, sleeve and side seams.

Neck band
With smaller needles and RS facing, pick up and k 87 (91, 95, 95) sts evenly around neck edge.

Row 1 (WS): Knit.
Row 2 (RS): *K2tog, yo; rep from *, end k1.
Row 3: Knit.
Bind off all sts.

Button band
With smaller needles and RS facing, pick up and k 79 (83, 87, 91) sts evenly along left front edge.
Rows 1–3: K1, *p1, k1; rep from * across.
Bind off all sts.

Buttonhole band
With smaller needles and RS facing, pick up and k 79 (83, 87, 91) sts evenly along right front edge.
Row 1 (WS): Knit.
Row 2 (RS): *K2tog, yo; rep from *, end k1.
Row 3: Knit.
Bind off all sts.

Finishing
Sew buttons evenly down button band (buttonholes are yo’s).
