Sizes
Woman's small/medium (medium/large) -- shoe sizes 5-7 (7-9) Instructions are given for smaller size, with larger size in parentheses. When only 1 number is given, it applies to both sizes.
Finished Measurements
Foot circumference: 7 1/2 (8 1/2) inches
Leg length: 6 inches from heel flap to top edge of sock
Materials
- Knit Picks Stroll Fingering (fingering weight; 75% super-wash merino wool/25% nylon; 231 yds/50g per skein): 2 skeins rainforest heather #25608
- Size 1 (2.25mm) double-point needles (set of 4) or size needed to obtain gauge
- Stitch markers
Gauge
To save time, take time to check gauge.
32 sts and 48 rnds = 4 inches/10cm in St st.
Special Abbreviations
Knit 3 together (k3tog): Knit next 3 sts on left needle tog as 1 (2 sts dec).
Slip, slip, slip, knit (sssk): Slip next 3 sts 1 at a time kwise, insert LH needle from back to front through all sts and knit 3 sts tog (2 sts dec).
N1, N2, N3: Needle 1, Needle 2, Needle 3.
Pattern Stitch
Note: A chart for each size is provided for those preferring to work pat st from a chart.
Lace [multiple of 18 (20) sts, dec to multiple of 16 (18)]
Rnd 1: *K3tog, yo, k1, yo, sssk, p2 (3), k7, p2 (3); rep from * around -- multiple of 16 (18) sts.
Rnd 2: *K1, yo, k3, yo, k1, p2 (3), k7, p2 (3); rep from * around -- multiple of 18 (20) sts.
Rnds 3 and 4: *K7, p2 (3); rep from * around.
Rnd 5-8: Rep Rnds 1-4.
Rnd 9: *K3tog, yo, k1, yo, sssk, p2 (3), k7, p2 (3); rep from * around -- multiple of 16 (18).
Rnd 10: *K1, yo, k3, yo, k1, p2 (3), k7, p2 (3); rep from * around -- multiple of 18 (20).
Rnd 11: *K7, p2 (3), k3tog, yo, k1, yo, sssk, p2 (3); rep from * around -- multiple of 16 (18) sts.
Rnd 12: *K7, p2 (3), k1, yo, k3, yo, k1, p2 (3); rep from * around -- multiple of 18 (20) sts.
Rnds 13-16: Rep Rnds 9-12.
Rnd 17 and 18: Rep Rnds 3 and 4.
Rnds 19 and 20: Rep Rnds 11 and 12.
Rnds 21 and 22: Rep Rnds 3 and 4.
Rnds 23 and 24: Rep Rnds 11 and 12.
Rnds 25-28: Rep Rnds 9-12.

Socks
Cuff
Cast on 72 (80) sts, having 18 (20) sts each on N1 and N3, and 36 (40) sts on N2. Place marker and join being careful not to twist sts.
Work in k1, p1 rib for 1 inch.
Leg
Rep [Rnds 1-28 of Lace pat] twice, then rep Rnds 1-10 once (leg should measure approx 6 inches from cast-on edge).
Slip last st on N1 to beg of N2 and last st on N2 to beg of N3 -- 36 (40) sts on N2 for instep and 18 (20) sts each on N1 and N3 for heel.
With N3, knit across sts on N1.
Heel flap is worked in rows on these sts.
Heel flap
Row 1 (WS): Sl 1, p35 (39), turn.
Row 2 (RS): Sl 1, [k1, sl 1] 17 (19) times, k1, turn.
Rep [Rows 1 and 2] 17 (19) more times -- 36 (40) rows.
Turn heel
Row 1 (WS): Sl 1, p19 (21), p2tog, p1, turn.
Row 2: Sl 1, k5, ssk, k1, turn.
Row 3: Sl 1, p6, p2tog, p1, turn.
Row 4: Sl 1, k7, ssk, k1, turn.
Continue in this manner, working 1 more st on each row, until all sts have been worked, ending with a RS row -- 20 (22) sts.
Gusset
With RS facing and same needle, pick up and knit 20 (22) sts along left side of heel flap (N1); work in established Lace pat across 36 (40) instep sts (N2); pick up and knit 20 (22) sts along right side of heel flap, k10 (11) from N1 -- 96 (106) sts; 30 (33) sts on N1 and N3 and 36 (40) sts each on N2.
Place marker and join to work in rnds.
Shape gusset M
Rnd 1: N1: Knit to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1; N2: work in established pat; N3: k1, ssk, knit across.
Rnd 2: Knit around.
Rep Rnds 1 and 2 until 72 (80) sts rem.
Work even until sock measures 1 1/2 inches less than desired length to toe.
Toe
Rnd 1: N1: Knit to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1; N2: k1, ssk, knit to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1; N3: k1, ssk, knit across.
Rnd 2: Knit around.
Rep Rnds 1 and 2 until 40 sts rem -- 10 sts each on N1 and N3; 20 sts on N2.
Then rep Rnd 1 until 20 sts rem -- 5 sts each on N1 and N3 and 10 sts on N2.
Finishing
With N3, knit across sts on N1.
Graft toe sts using Kitchener st.
