Materials
- Patons Grace 100% mercerized cotton (136 yds/50g per ball): 3 balls whisper #62015
- Size 5 (3.75mm) double-pointed needles
- Size 6 (4mm) 16- and 24-inch circular needles or size needed to obtain gauge
- Size F/5 (3.75mm) crochet hook
- 2/3 yd (20-inch-wide) stiff buckram for interfacing
- 1/4 yd (45-inch-wide) nonwoven fabric for lining
- 2/3 yd (1-inch-wide) white grosgrain ribbon
- Plastic bowl from whipped topping
- Flowers, ribbon or lace as desired for trim
Gauge
20 sts and 28 rnds = 4 inches/10cm with larger needles in WSS pat.
16 sts and 28 rnds = 4 inches/10cm with larger needles in trellis lace pat.
To save time, take time to check gauge.
Special Abbreviations
Wrap Slip St (WSS): Bring yarn to front, sl next st as if to purl, take yarn to back.
Make 1 (M1): Make a backward lp and place it on RH needle.
Pattern Stitches
A. Wrap SS Pat
Rnds 1, 2 and 3: Knit.
Rnd 4: *K5, WSS, rep from * around.
Rnds 5, 6 and 7: Knit.
Rnd 8: K2,*WSS, k5, rep from * around, ending with k3.
Rep Rnds 1–8 for pat.
B. Trellis Lace
Rnd l: *Ssk, yo, rep from * around
Rnd 2: Knit.
Rep Rnds 1 and 2 for pat.
Hat
Top
With smaller dpns, cast on 9 sts, leaving an 8-inch end for sewing opening. Join without twisting, pm between first and last sts. Knit l rnd.
Inc rnd: *K1, M1, rep from * around.
Knit 2 rnds. Rep inc rnd. Knit 4 rnds. Rep inc rnd. Knit 8 rnds.
Next inc rnd: *K3, M1, rep from * around. (96 sts)
Knit 2 rnds. Purl l rnd.
Sides
Change to larger 16-inch needle. Work even in Pat A until side measure 3 1/2 inches above purl rnd. BO, do not cut last lp. Drop yarn.
Brim
With RH needle, pick up back lp only of each bound-off st. (96 sts)
Inc rnd: *K2, M1, k1, M1, rep from * around. (160 sts)
Work in Pat B until brim measures 6 1/2 inches above picked-up sts. Bound-off very loosely in knit. Do not cut last lp. With crochet hook, work 2 sc in each bound-off st. Sl st to join.
Picot edge
*Ch 3, sl st in same st, sl st in next 4 sts, rep from * around. Fasten off.
Finishing
Cut 1 piece of interfacing 22 inches long x 3 1/2 inches wide. Cut another piece of interfacing into a circle with a 6 1/2-inch diameter. Sew 1 long side of rectangle around edge of circle, having a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Overlap ends by 3/8 inch. Tack interfacing to inside top of crown. Slipstitch edge of interfacing to crown 1/4 inch above bottom edge.
Cut l piece of lining material 22 inches long x 4 inches wide. Cut another piece of lining into a circle with a 6 1/2-inch diameter. With RS tog, sew short sides of rectangular piece tog with a 1/4-inch seam. Sew one long edge of side piece to outer edge of circle. Pin lining to inside of crown along bottom edge, turning under 1/2 inch on raw edge. Slipstitch in place. Cut l piece of ribbon 1/2 inch longer than inside measurement of hat. Slipstitch in place over lining along bottom edge.
Stiffen hat brim only with fabric stiffener, following directions on package. Place hat over plastic bowl to hold shape of crown. Pin brim to a flat surface (a large piece of plastic foam works well), stretching and smoothing brim to open lace. Let dry thoroughly.
Trim as desired with ribbon, lace, flowers, etc.
