The Language of Loops

I tend to think of knitting as an international language with dialects and accents from every corner of the globe in which knitters reside. It seems so magical to me that we can create across boundaries of speech, culture and geography, and that we have one special language of loops that I believe can transcend all other borders. I often spend time looking at knitting sites in other languages because, once you learn how to read knitting, the actual language of the pattern is secondary. There are people all over the globe at this exact moment who are completing the same action of making with needles and yarn, sitting or standing, fast or slow. The scents, sights and sounds that surround them may be different, but the same actions are still being completed. Think of the clicking noises all those knitting needles are making and of the yardage we are consuming en masse right now. The collective stitch count must be in the trillions!

Since we are all working on the same action over and over, the probability of innovation is very high. New tips, tricks and ideas are constantly being invented with purpose or by happy accident. Whether in person or over the internet, we sit together stitching, chatting, laughing, sympathizing, passing on knowledge and ideas. We may be removed from our ancient huts and communal living, but we still manage to find each other and make together, to teach new ideas and methods. Each and every knitter is part of a bigger collective of knowledge that transcends our backgrounds and beliefs, all of us in love with the seemingly innocuous unifier of looping string over sticks.

Happy knitting!
