Heather says: I would say to Marian (Marian Kinkead's Tale of Woe from newsletter February 12, 2010) that maybe it isn't the other kids who are the only ones with a problem. Marian is totally within her rights and obligations to say to her grandson that other kids may be jealous or don't understand because they do not have someone who loves them enough or is talented enough to knit them a sweater! I am sure if her grandson said to his friends that his grandmother put a hug in each stitch and he is special because she made it for him, it would give them pause. Don't buckle to the consumer culture. Overcome it by teaching the children in your life better. Obviously, personal preference still plays into it. I have one son who is always too warm. I don't make him sweaters, but he has some of the coolest hats on the block. If Marian's grandson enjoys her work, there isn't a better person to knit for!

    Amen to that! As a knitter, you must first value your own work. Make certain that your work is the best you can produce, and then teach those for whom you knit that they are fortunate to be the recipients of fine handwork! -- Editor
