Design Highlights
The one design which caused gasps from the entire audience was a skimpy "one-piece" garment. The yarn that was used it more often used to create socks or form-fitting tanks, but here it was made into a multi-strapped swimsuit resembling a bikini, which would probably not perform well in the water. The announcer quipped, "Everyone could wear this suit!" That got a big laugh. Other crowd favorites were a man's sleeveless cabled vest of a yak blend worn sans shirt by a buff young gentleman; a gleaming crocheted silk pineapple shawl with a generous fringe; and a swing coat with tunic dress designed by Melissa Leapman in Skacel's Zitron yarn.
TNNA is open only to retailers or those in the yarn industry; no cash purchases are permitted. However, there was plenty of buzz surrounding new yarns and notions, bags and designs throughout the large venue. Store owners and company reps were making connections everywhere on the floor during the three-day event. If we can draw conclusions from that evidence, the health of the yarn industry is good. Knitters can take heart that yarn will continue to be made and distributed in the coming year, so hoarding is discouraged. There is enough for us all to knit and crochet!
