I have another low-cost idea for a blocking mat. I purchased a large piece of 1-inch-thick insulation foam from a building-supply store (sorry, this was many years ago, and I can't recall its cost, other than that it was inexpensive). I cut two pieces -- one around 14 inches square (perfect for blocking individual afghan blocks) and another approximately 38 inches square. I covered each with thin batting and then navy gingham fabric with 1-inch squares. The gingham makes squaring things up a cinch, and the navy has high contrast, making the squares easy to see. I have had these for years, and they have held up really well through kids, a couple of moves and plenty of blocking! --Michele Montgomery
