It's a Wrap

When I sat down to write this issue's "It's a Wrap" segment, I really, REALLY struggled -- first, trying to think of a topic, and then trying to write about said topic, and when that didn't work, trying again to think of a different topic, etc., etc. It dawned on me that I've been hitting a wall lately with all of my work. I am sure you are all familiar with the wall. It's the one where none of our ideas seem to want to pan out; we are unmotivated, uninspired.

Eastern healing sciences posit that, our bodies are intricately tied to the seasons. Ayurveda, for example, calls winter a Vata season. In this ancient form of medicine, Vata is one of the three energies that influences our bodies. The Vata season is the time when we need to withdraw into the silence of ourselves in order to re-ground, to soothe our hearts from the external harshness. In fact, the ancient seers deemed it necessary to do so. Attempting to maintain a hectic, stressed lifestyle during this Vata time, with high demands or complex projects, increases the Vata within us, throwing it out of balance and making us ungrounded, anxious and tired. It is natural for us to want to slow down and to comfort ourselves in warmth and relaxation.

When I try to force myself to work a little more fast-paced, that internal warning rings and reminds me that now is the time to rest. I encourage you, too, dear readers to take these last moments of winter and step back from frenzied projects or chaotic work. What are your ultimate comfort knits? What simple, soft yarns call to you when you need a simple, grounding knitting experience? I'd love to to hear about it.

Hugs,
