It's a Wrap

I've been sitting here mulling over what my life would be like if I had never learned to knit ... and I just can't picture it!

I've always been crafty and somewhat artistic, but on the day I learned to knit (about seven or eight years ago), I never expected such an overwhelming love and passion to stir up inside of me. I still remember that day. I used to hang out with kids that needed a little extra attention from someone like me, and on this particular afternoon, my friend (who was 12 years old) and I were sitting in the library when she pulled out her knitting to finish a scarf for her dad. It was her first project, and she had started learning to knit through school. Curious, I watched her go at it for a while; it just looked so interesting that I blurted, "Teach me!"

We packed up our bags, went to a craft store, grabbed some yarn and needles, and she proceeded to teach me how to knit. Oh, how my shoulders ached from using my entire arm to wrap a stitch, how my eyes strained to discern what I was doing; but gosh -- it was the best thing EVER!

In that first month, I knit a handbag, a scarf and several washcloths. My sweet friend spent the entire month knitting her scarf, which ended up as a table runner with widening/narrowing edges that looked like the shoreline of the ocean. And while both of our first projects literally fell apart from the dropped stitches over time, it was the most amazing experience that started me on a path I could never have predicted. Less than four years later, I was making up my own pieces, and by 2009, I was shyly dipping my toes into the real world of design.

So, while I may not know what I'd be doing without the knitting goodness of fiber, I DO know that I wouldn't want to be doing anything else. Write to me and share your first knitting experience. I can't wait to hear about it!
