A Day at the Races

One of my husband's many interests lies in anything related to cars. He is a member of a team that participates in an endurance racing circuit called "The 24 Hours of LeMons." A play on the 24 Hours of Le Mans race that is held in France and made famous here by Steve McQueen in the 1971 film Le Mans, these tracks are run with cars that cost less than $500. And while all of the teams strive to win the race, which takes place over two days, they also strive to have a good time, which they do.

Most cars are decorated in some silly fashion, and they're dressed up as everything from pigs to boats to time bombs. Our team is retiring its current car, a BMW called Bluey, at the end of this season, and the guys held a little retirement party for it complete with decorations and cake. The car is going out proudly with a 14th place finish out of a field of 133 entrants.

I don't know yet what type of car they'll be racing next year, but there's talk of running a Volvo. How long do you think it would take me to knit a multicolored Swedish-style sweater for a car?
