Knitting to Fit

Although I have designed many knitted items and can write my own patterns, sometimes I just want to knit without having to do the planning and the math, and other times, I just love a pattern that someone else has designed. So it was when I needed to quickly knit a gift for our friends' newborn son, Silvio.

I flipped through my editions of the One-Skein Wonders books, each one containing 101 projects from various designers. When I landed on the Knitted Cap With Pigtails, designed by Linda O'Leary for the first book in the series, 101 Yarn-Shop Favorites, I immediately recognized it as the hat for Silvio.

This particular pattern is written for a finished size of 19 inches, to fit most adults. When I looked at the gauge, 14 stitches to 4 inches or 3.5 stitches per inch on U.S. size 10 needles, I quickly realized that I could adapt this pattern for a baby by working at a finer gauge. A quick swatch of Plymouth Yarn's Mushishi on U.S. size 7 needles gave me the perfect fit: 19 stitches to 4 inches or 4.75 stitches per inch. The hat is worked on 60 stitches, and my gauge resulted in a hat that's a little more than 12.5 inches around. The average baby's head is 14 inches, so with a little less than 1.5 inches of negative ease to keep the hat on his head, I was able to follow the pattern exactly as written. And now Silvio is all set for winter!

Knit on!
