- for Bumblebee: 1 ball each black #15 (MC) and gold #20 (CC)
- Size 7 (4.5mm) double-point needles (set of 5) or size needed to obtain gauge
- 2 bobbins
- Stitch markers, 1 in CC for beg of rnd
Gauge
19 sts and 28 rnds = 4 inches/10cm in St st.
To save time, take time to check gauge.
Special Abbreviation
Increase (inc): Inc 1 by knitting in front and then in back of next st.
Special Technique
I-Cord: *K4, do not turn, slip sts back to LH needle; rep from * until cord is desired length. Bind off.
Pattern Notes
The 2 vertical bands of MC on the Ladybug and Butterfly hats are worked in intarsia in the round. Wind 2 bobbins with MC. When you get to the vertical stripes, bring MC up from under CC and knit; then continue on with same ball of CC.
The spots and markings on the Ladybug and Butterfly hats are worked in duplicate stitch after the hat is completed.
Hats
Brim
With MC, cast on 56 sts and distribute evenly on 4 dpns; place marker for beg of rnd and join, taking care not to twist sts.
Knit 8 rnds.
Body & Crown
Ladybug & Butterfly Hats
Work appropriate charts and on last rnd, place markers every 7 sts.
Dec rnd: *With MC, knit to 2 sts before marker, k2tog; rep from * around -- 48 sts.
Rep Dec rnd until 16 sts rem.
Next rnd: Removing markers, k2tog all around -- 8 sts.
Close any gaps at top of hat. Work duplicate st areas on hats.

Bumblebee Hat
*Knit 4 rnds CC, knit 4 rnds MC; rep from * once more, then knit 3 rnds CC and on last rnd, place markers every 7 sts.
Dec rnd: *With CC, knit to 2 sts before marker, k2tog; rep from * around -- 48 sts.
Change to MC and rep Dec rnd until 16 sts rem.
Next rnd: Removing markers, k2tog all around -- 8 sts.
Antenna Stalk
Sl 4 sts to 1 dpn and rem 4 sts to 2nd dpn.
Work 4-st I-Cord on first dpn for 9 rnds/rows.
Antenna Bobble
Rnd 1: Inc in each st around -- 8 sts.
Rnd 2: Knit around.
Rnd 3: Inc in each st around -- 16 sts.
Rnd 4: K2tog around -- 8 sts.
Rnd 5: K2tog around -- 4 sts.
Cut yarn, leaving long tail. With tapestry needle, thread tail through rem sts, and pull tight.
Pass tail through bobble several times so that tail starts to stuff inside of bobble. When bobble is firm enough, pass yarn tail down inside stalk and draw out, cut close to work so tail is hidden inside.
Make another antenna stalk and antenna bobble on rem 4 sts on 2nd dpn.
Finishing
Close any gaps at top of hat.
Lay both antenna stalks side by side and sew first 3 rnds of 1 stalk to the other so antennae stand up at base, and then flop over.
