Yarn Goblins

I'm not a big believer in the supernatural, but if things keep going the way they are, I'll have to rethink my stand. I recently asked my friend Dot to design and crochet a baby sweater as a promotional piece for the forthcoming book, 101 Crochet One-Skein Wonders. Because she had only one skein of yarn to work with, Dot decided to wind the skein into two equal halves -- if she could complete the back and one sleeve with half the yarn, she'd be sure to have enough for the front and the second sleeve.

When I phoned Dot to check on her progress, she reported that she'd completed the back and one sleeve but that somehow her second ball of yarn had disappeared. We went through the list of every place it could be. Nothing. After two days of looking, she gave up the search and began again with a new skein. We agreed that she would most likely find the second ball of the old yarn very shortly after she mailed me the sweater worked in the new yarn.

The sweater arrived two days ago. That afternoon, I began working on the duplicate stitch tutorial for this issue. First, I knitted the square with white yarn, and then I cut a yard or so of the blue to begin the stitching. Because it's warm in my second-floor workroom, I took the swatch to the living room and worked by the whirr of a fan. When I ran out of the blue yarn, I trotted back upstairs for more. And -- you guessed it -- the skein of blue yarn was nowhere to be found. The white was where I'd left it, but not the blue.

I swear I looked everywhere! While looking, I heard my computer beep with a new incoming email. It was from Dot, telling me that the second ball of yarn had just appeared. My answer? "That's great, Dot. But did the goblins have to take my yarn away in order to replace yours?" After wasting almost an hour searching for the blue yarn, I found it in one of the many places I'm sure I'd already looked several times.
