Stash & Hoarders
We stash-and-hoarders must gravitate to each other as moths to a flame; many of my knit friends and clients appear to be afflicted with this condition. Each time we enter a yarn shop, Web site, farmer's market, garage sale, closeout or auction, we run the risk of purchasing more yarn. It could be one skein of yarn or 20 which beckons to our fickle hearts and hands whispering, "Pssst, come over here and just touch this." We couldn't possibly have a purpose in mind for each ball, hank or skein we bring home, but we rationalize that one day this particular fabulous yarn won't be available any longer, and the thought of continuing a career of knitting pleasure without this one skein is just unimaginable!
Some knitters are very creative about storing their yarn. Designer and teacher Lily Chin has a list of 10 favorite storage spaces in her New York apartment. The list includes removing the forms from decorator pillows and stuffing them with yarn, hanging a large bag outside a window, and using the oven in her kitchen for storage since it is never used for food preparation! All are ingenious possibilities, but perhaps not practical for most of us.
