Luscious Summer Cardigan

Materials

  • Naturally Cotton Connection D.K. No.7, 86 percent cotton/14 percent wool from S.R. Kertzer Ltd. (115 yds/50g per skein):
    • 12 skeins beige #401
  • Size 6 (4mm) needles or size needed to obtain gauge
  • Cable needle
  • Stitch holders
  • Size C/2 (2.75mm) crochet hook
  • 8 (3/4-inch) buttons ivory #35488 from JHB International Inc.

Gauge
22 sts and 30 rows = 4 inches/ 10cm in moss st
To save time, take time to check gauge.

Pattern Notes
Beg each strip with 5 rows of garter st.
Size may be adjusted by adding or omitting strips of Patt A or moss st at underarm.

Pattern A (panel of 18 sts)
Rows 1, 3 and 5 (WS): K2, p14, k2.
Row 2: P2, k3, k2tog, yo, k4, yo, ssk, k3, p2.
Row 4: P2, k2, k2tog, yo, k6, yo, ssk, k2, p2.
Row 6: P2, k1, k2tog, yo, k2, p4, k2, yo, ssk, k1, p2.
Row 7: K2, p5, k4, p5, k2.
Row 8: P2, k2tog, yo, k3, p4, k3, yo, ssk, p2.
Rep Rows 1-8 for patt.

Pattern B (panel of 9 sts)
Row 1 (WS): K3, p3, k3.
Row 2: P3, [k1, yo] twice, k1, p3. (11 sts)
Rows 3 and 9: K3, p5, k3.
Row 4: P3, k2, yo, k1, yo, k2, p3. (13 sts)
Rows 5 and 7: K3, p7, k3.
Row 6: P3, ssk, k1, [yo, k1] twice, k2tog, p3. (13 sts)
Row 8: P3, ssk, k3, k2tog, p3. (11 sts)
Row 10: P3, ssk, k1, k2tog, p3. (9 sts)
Row 11: K3, p3, k3.
Row 12: P3, yo, sl 2 tog knitwise, k1, p2sso, yo, p3. (9 sts)

Pattern C (multiple of 10 sts)
CO 7 sts.
Base Row 1 (WS): K2, p3, k2.
Base Row 2: P2, [k in front and back of same st] 3 times, p2. (10 sts)
Beg patt
Row 1 and rem WS rows: K2, p6, k2.
Row 2: P2, sl 3 sts on cn and hold in back, k3, k3 from cn, p2.
Rows 4, 6 and 8: P2, k6, p2.
Rep Rows 1-8 for patt.
Finishing row: P2, place 3 sts on cn and hold in back, [k 1 st from ndl and 1 st from cn tog] 3 times, p2. (7 sts rem)

Pattern D (even number of sts)
Row 1: *K1, p1, rep from * across.
Rows 2 and 4: K the knit sts and p the purl sts.
Row 3: *P1, k1, rep from * across.
Rep Rows 1-4 for patt.

Back
Work 4 strips patt A, and 2 strips each patts B and C. Beg with 5 rows garter st, then work 192 rows of patt. Do not BO; place all sts on holders.

Right Front
Work 1 strip each patts A, B, and C as for back. Work 1 strip patt A 144 rows long for center front. Do not BO; place all sts on holders.

Left Front
Make strips as for right front.

Sleeve
CO 64 sts. Work in patt D for 8 inches, inc 1 st on each side [every 6th row] 10 times. (84 sts)
BO all sts. Sew side seam.

Luscious Summer CardiganFinishing
Referring to Fig. 1 and using a crochet hook, join strips, taking care to match patts on front and back strips.
BO front and back shoulder sts tog as follows:
Hold ndls containing shoulder sts parallel, right sides tog; with 3rd ndl, k first st on front and back ndls tog, *k next st on both ndls tog, BO 1, rep from * until all sts are worked, fasten off. Rep for 2nd shoulder.

Button band
Pick up and k 75 sts along left front edge.
Rows 1-10: Knit.
BO all sts.

Buttonhole band
Pick up and k 75 sts from right front edge.
Rows 1-5: Knit.
Row 6: K6, *yo, ssk, k8, rep from *, end k4. (7 buttonholes)
Rows 7-10: Knit.
BO all sts.

Neck band
Pick up and k 140 sts around neck, including sts on holders.
Rows 1-6: Knit.
Row 7: K3, yo, ssk, k135.
Rows 8-11: Knit.
BO all sts firmly.

Lower edge
With crochet hook and WS facing, work 1 row of sc around bottom edge. Fasten off. Set in sleeves.
Block sweater to size. Sew buttons across from buttonholes.
