The Deceptively Simple Slip Stitch

Slipped stitches can create a complex look in your knits, and this technique may be much simpler than you think. When working the most basic slip stitch, you pass a stitch from the left needle to the right needle without knitting it. The yarn may be slipped behind the slipped-stitch or in front of it, resulting in a horizontal bar. Including this technique with basic knit and purl patterns is one of the easiest ways to add intriguing surface texture to the overall look of your design.

Other slip-stitch combinations may include creating elongated stitches, as shown in the example of the White Mountain Kimono, from the September 2011 issue of Creative Knitting magazine. This piece features a highly- textured slip-stitch pattern that employs the use of three colors.
