In January, I had the unique opportunity to tour the innovative Lion Brand Yarn Studio, a unique retail concept store located at 34 W. 15 St. in New York City. Lion Brand, a family-owned company, first opened its doors 132 years ago. Today, David Blumenthal, fourth-generation owner, resides at the helm. Blumenthal wanted to create a studio space with three main goals in mind: education, innovation and inspiration. It was of primary importance to create a space that had an education center, an event center and an art space.

Education

The studio offers over 90 specialty workshops, taught exclusively by certified instructors. The class format is very much like a university class setting where the emphasis is on learning rather than making a "thing," such as a scarf, a hat or a garment. Instead, the student is introduced to a process that breaks the methods down into systematic, manageable steps.

Innovation

The sampling wall is located at the very front of the studio, which displays several cones of yarns that you can "test drive" before purchasing. Just reel off a few yards and have fun!

Lion Brand Studio prides itself on being a completely green environment with bamboo floors, recycled materials and long-lasting fluorescent lighting.

The events at the studio are big attractions. There are groups galore with names like Men's Knits, Yarn Craft Night, Blind Knitters, Free Movie Night and Flicks With Sticks.

The book launches at the studio are not your typical book signings. With major names like Nicky Epstein and Lily Chin, you'll get a slide show and a fashion show, and the authors may also share an aspect of the book, such as a demonstration or technique explanation.

Inspiration

Every three months a new fiber art installation is on display in the main window of the studio, with interior table displays in the Studio changing monthly. Each month a featured yarn is also on display. It's truly like a candy store for knitters!

I also was lucky enough to see a new installation of original sheep illustrations by Nicky Epstein. The sheep's dimensional fleece was knitted with wool yarn, and different knitting techniques were used for each to create a variety of textures. The illustrations represent five different breeds of sheep: Leicester, Merino, Cooperworth, Drysdale and Lincoln. Prints can be purchased at Lion Brand Yarn Studio.
