Natalie Erber Asks

"I have loved knitting since my mother taught me when I was about 10 years old. I am currently making a little cardigan for a baby my daughter expects to have in January. My question: When I assemble the pieces, do I have to have special pins for knitted garments, or can I use regular pins? I have been asking others to assemble my knitted pieces, but now I am determined to resume assembling myself." -- Natalie Erber

Editor's Comments

When assembling knitted garments, I never use any pins. I like using mattress stitch to sew most seams, whether vertical, horizontal or combinations of the two. Pins are unnecessary when using these methods, in my opinion, since the sewing is done from the right side of the work. For my tutorial on working mattress stitch, view the archived Creative Knitting newsletter from Nov. 7, 2008. One of the easiest ways to elevate your confidence and the beauty of your finished knitted projects is to practice better finishing techniques.

For another view, Kara Gott Warner's new book, The Perfect Finish, offers a wonderful article on assembling knit projects with step-by-step photos to clearly see just how it's done. Order it from AnniesCatalog.com.

I hope you'll find these tips helpful, Natalie. -- Editor
