What Is It?

My still-knitting mother recently came across a circular needle with a difference; perhaps a reader can tell us why its features are unique? It measures 29 inches in length and is a U.S. size 4 (3.5mm). The cable is a fairly flexible uncoated metal, and the silvery tips are about 5 inches long with a slight curve where they meet the cable in a seamless join. On one tip, there is a slightly flattened area an inch from the end (think about a crochet-hook grip, but only on one side). About 1/8 inch from the tip of each end is a tiny hole bored perpendicularly through the needle. Rather peculiar, eh?
