Marti Marches On

"When I saw mention of the Yarn Harlot and the cure for depression in your last newsletter, I knew I had to share my experience. In 2006, a very dear friend of mine passed away suddenly, and I was the one to find him nearly a week later. My emotions hit rock bottom, and it seemed like I'd never dig out of that pit. Finally, after four months of misery, a friend in Tennessee suggested I learn how to knit socks as she wanted to learn and said I could help her by learning how myself (yes, I live in California, but we both had been knitting off and on for years and had been knitting lace as a team effort prior to this happening). So, even though my heart wasn't in it, I learned how to knit a sock and let her know. As we corresponded back and forth about each consecutive sock we worked on, I became more interested, and by the end of one year, had knitted over 30 pair of socks! Okay, so maybe I'm a bit obsessive; in any case, the fact that I finally had control over one small piece of my life began the healing process, and I was gradually able to reclaim my life. It's now been four years since I lost my friend, and I haven't lost my love of knitting socks (now over 110 pair knitted). Although I continue to knit other things, I truly believe that knitting those socks saved my life!"

Marti, thanks for reliving a painful time to offer help to others. Your total of 110 pairs of socks knitted to date is quite impressive. Whatever have you done with all those socks? --Editor
