Mosaic Pot Cover

Design by Patricia Warrick

Two variegated yarns work in harmony along with a mosaic stitch for a bright garden accent.

Skill Level
Easy

Finished Size
Circumference: 19 1/2 inches
Height: 8 inches

Materials

  • Worsted weight cotton yarn*(98 yds/2 oz per ball): 1 ball each desert bloom #188 (A) and painted desert #190 (B)
  • Size 7 (4.5 mm) straight and double-point needles or size needed to obtain gauge
  • Size F/5 (3.75 mm) crochet hook for edging)
  • Stitch market
*Sample project was completed with Peaches & Crème (100% cotton).

Gauge
18 sts and 25 rows = 4 inches in Mosaic pat.
To save time, take time to check gauge.

Special Abbreviation
Knit in front and back (kfb): Inc by knitting in front and back of next st.

Pattern Notes
Slip all stitches purlwise. On right side (RS) rows, keep working yarn in back when slipping stitches; on wrong side (WS) rows, keep working yarn in front.

Do not cut yarn when changing colors. Colors are worked alternately for 2 rows each, with some stitches knitted or purled in the "active" yarn and some stitches slipped or unworked, to be knitted or purled in the other yarn 1 or 2 rows later. Let the inactive yarn wait at the beginning of the right-side row and pick it up again when it becomes the active yarn; this avoids multiple loose ends to weave in at the end.

A chart is provided for those preferring to work Mosaic pattern from a chart.

Bottom

Rnd 1: K8.
Rnd 2: Kfb of each st--16 sts.
Rnd 3: *K1, kfb; rep from * around--24 sts.
Rnd 4 and all even-numbered rnds: Knit around.
Rnd 5: *K2, kfb; rep from * around--32 sts.
Rnd 7: *K3, kfb; rep from * around--40 sts.
Rnd 9: *K4, kfb; rep from * around--48 sts.
Rnd 11: *K5, kfb; rep from * around--56 sts.

Rnd 15: *K7, kfb; rep from * around-- 72 sts.
Rnd 17: *K8, kfb; rep from * around--80 sts.
Rnd 18: Knit around. Bind off, leaving 40-inch tail for sewing.
Run beg tail of A row through cast-on sts and tighten gently to close center of bottom.

Note: On mosaic charts, each row is worked twice; odd-numbered rows are RS rows, worked from right to left, and even-numbered rows are WS rows, worked from left to right with the first stitch determining the color used. Stitches in the row color are knitted (or purled), and stitches in the other color are slipped.

Finishing
Sew bound-off edge of bottom to bound-off edge of side to form a tube that is open at 1 end.

Top Edging
Note: If not familiar with reverse single crochet (reverse sc), refer to StitchGuide.com.
With crochet hook and B, work reverse sc evenly around open end of tube. Fasten off.
