Note From the Editor

Just a decade ago, Creative Knitting magazine began with a mission that knitting should be for everyone. And today, that legacy continues.

This autumn issue marks the 10th anniversary of Creative Knitting magazine, which morphed from a tiny digest called Knitting World, released in 1978.

In this issue, we'll take a little trip back in time to meet the first editor of Creative Knitting and learn what it was like in the early days. Turn to page 90 to read more.

This anniversary issue inspires me to reflect back to my own knitting origins and to a time when my passion started -- to that little girl who was so curious by what Grandma was knitting. Little did my grandmother know that this was one of the greatest gifts she had given me, helping to pave the way for my exciting journey ahead.

We can all remember the first pivotal moment in our early knitting experience. Mine was at The Yarn Connection, a little shop that once existed on Madison Avenue, in New York City. I was holding a pair of #7 Susan Bates aluminum needles and knitting with off-white worsted-weight wool. I can't recall the brand of yarn, but I do remember the tiny swatch I was making, which consisted of only 12 stitches, so that I could get the hang of knitting a few rows. Then, on that very same swatch, I learned how to purl. It was a brisk autumn evening many years ago, and it was the spark that started it all.

I cherish the first moments when my passion was ignited, and I constantly feel a sense of gratitude for the gifts that I have been given. In turn, this inspires me to return this by sharing with those who share the same excitement -- you, the loyal readers of Creative Knitting magazine. Thank you so much for your continued interest.

Are you a longtime reader who can remember the first issue of Creative Knitting . . . or back to the days of Knitting World?

What sparked the fire in your heart to begin your knitting journey? I'd love to hear from you. Send your queries to: Editor@CreativeKnittingMagazine.com, and your story may appear on the pages of Creative Knitting or on my editor's blog, SplendidSticks.com.

Wishing you delightful decades of knitting passions!

Kara Gott Warner
Executive Editor, Creative Knitting magazine

Arts in Illustration. As a freelance illustrator, she specialized in technical illustrations for knitting, crochet and other craft books for major publishers. In 2002, Kara began designing patterns for her independent collection of knitting patterns, sold under the igottknits label. Her patterns are sold exclusively on Annie's and e-PatternsCentral.

Kara first learned how to knit at age 12 from her grandmother, but not until her early adult life did she come back to the craft with reckless abandon. When Kara rediscovered knitting, she used it as a much-needed escape from her hectic life working as a designer in New York City. She quickly fell in love with knitting, and her needles haven't stopped clicking since. As editor, Kara first joined Annie's in 2007 as a freelance editor and produced a variety of hardcover knitting books. In June 2010, Kara joined the Annie's family full-time, as executive editor of Creative Knitting magazine and knit publications.

Kara's knitwear designs have been published in Creative Knitting, Vogue Knitting, Interweave Knits and Family Circle Easy Knitting. She is also the author of The Divine Drop Stitch.

You can follow Kara on her blogging adventures at SplendidSticks.
