Note From the Editor

"First comes thought; then organization of that thought into ideas and plans; then transformation of those plans into reality. The beginning, as you will observe, is in your imagination."
-- Napoleon Hill

Being like a child at play is the magic formula to imagination. As kids we simply believed that what we saw in our minds was just as real as what we saw with our eyes.

We dove in without any reservation or time spent in heavy analysis of the situation. Maybe we fell sometimes, but we're still here, and through the process, we learned some great lessons that we could not have gained without the confidence in our ability to create this world of our imagination.

Why not face our knitting with the same mindset? After all, what's the worst that could happen if we allowed our stitches to meander or if we dropped a stitch? Just some unknitting and a whole lot of learning, right?

When I embark on a new project, I construct every little detail about my future accomplishment. There's a sense of fulfillment that comes with the process of knitting row after row and allowing my mind to explore and envision what the finished creation will look like.

When it comes to swatching, I enjoy the mystery that a new ball of yarn holds and what it could become. How will it drape? How will the stitch pattern develop if I add this or change that? What if I use a big needle and then jump down to a small one?

Imagination is where the creative process is born. Believing is the magic ingredient to moving that idea into the realm of reality.

So I challenge you to think, imagine, plan and transform!

Executive Editor, Creative Knitting magazine

Kara first learned how to knit at age 12 from her grandmother, but not until her early adult life did she come back to the craft -- and hasn’t looked back. When Kara rediscovered knitting, she used it as a much-needed escape from her hectic life working as a designer in New York City. She quickly fell in love with knitting, and her needles haven't stopped clicking since.

Kara is a graduate of Parsons School of Design and holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in illustration. Her specialty, technical illustrations for knitting, crochet and other craft books for major publishers. In 2002, Kara began designing patterns for her independent collection of knitting patterns, sold under the igottknits label.

Kara joined the Annie’s team in 2008 as knitting book editor and produced a variety of hardcover knitting books. In June 2010, Kara joined the company full time as executive editor of Creative Knitting magazine and knit publications.

Kara's knitwear designs have been published in Creative Knitting, Interweave Knits, Vogue Knitting, and Family Circle Easy Knitting. She is also the author of The Divine Drop Stitch and instructor of the Mix & Match Sampler Annie's video class.
