Kara’s Quick-Knit Tip: Long-Tail Cast-On

How long a tail do I need for a Long-Tail Cast-On?

Unless you’re working with a very think yarn, an inch per stitch will provide more than enough. Also make sure that the tail end is over your thumb, and the ball end is over your finger–you use them up at different rates. The yarn that’s going onto the needle is the yarn from your forefinger, and it’s making the first row of stitches. The next row will be a wrong side row, so if you are working stockinette stitch, purl that row.
