Kara’s Quick-Knit Tip: Homemade Yarn Bobbins

Instead of using bobbins, try this neat trick and make your own yarn butterflies!

  1. Open your left hand in a V, with forefinger and middle finger and pinkie together.

Step 1

2. Hold  the end of the yarn between your left thumb and palm.

Step 2

3. Wrap yarn in a figure-eight around the fingers until you have pulled off enough yarn for your needs.

Step 3

4. Cut yarn, leaving a 4-inch tail, and wrap this tail around the center of the figure-eight, tucking the end into the wrap. Remove your fingers and let go of the starting tail. You can now pull on the starting end to release some yarn. Your homemade butterfly will continue to hold the remainder of the yarn in place until you need it.

Step 4

good tip! we, weavers and spinners call it “a butterfly”. Very handy when you need just a little color in your work.
